The following statistics provide a quick insight into the size of our target market.
Overweight
Approximately half the population of the United States, 143 million people, are overweight, including 58 million who are obese. Over 35 million people are on a diet at any given time, and 300,000 deaths a year are related to obesity.
Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is tied with cancer as the leading cause of disease-related death in the United States, accounting for two out of five deaths. 53 million people in the U.S. have cardiovascular disease.
Digestive Problems & IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome)
Each year, 62 million people are diagnosed with digestive problems. This includes five million suffering from IBS, which entails severe stomach and digestive problems. A diet including increased fiber is presently the only treatment that seems to help. Results of a national survey released in April 2004 indicate that an additional 19 million people may have IBS but have not been diagnosed.
Diabetes
There are 18.2 million known cases of diabetes in the United States, up 40% in the past 10 years. There are 16 million more Americans with pre-diabetes, a condition where the pancreas is not producing enough insulin to regulate blood levels, but not at serious enough levels to be diagnosed. That’s a total of over 34 million Americans whose pancreases are failing to do their job. Diabetes affects a higher proportion of older people, with 10-15% of people aged 50 and up being diabetic.
High Cholesterol
Close to half of all people in the United States have high cholesterol levels.
