Eat well, stay well this holiday
The holidays are a time for relaxing, for visiting with family and enjoying each others’ company. Reuniting with family and gathering with friends often centers around a meal. Eating well at this time of year is more challenging than at other times because we’re not on regular schedules (every day is a Saturday) and menu choices are often out of your hands…because they’re out of your kitchen! However, there are some rules of thumb that will help to curb unhealthy eating. They start with common sense and end with some simple pointers to help keep you on track!
Staying healthy over the holidays is easy. Follow the guidelines below for a no-hassles way to make it through the holidays fit as a fiddle.
Never skip a meal to make up for excesses. Part of eating well involves…eating! If it is regularly deprived of food, the body learns to save up in times of plenty, just as bears do when they fatten up before winter hibernation. Try to stick to a normal schedule.
- Eat something healthy before you go to a party or family gathering. You won’t arrive famished, and will be less likely to have second helpings of turkey stuffing and plum pudding with brandy sauce.
- Keeping an eye on portion sizes is half the battle with respect to eating well. Big portions overwork the digestive tract and lead to sluggishness, not to mention weight gain. Most of us need no more than 2000 calories per day, and that’s not much food!
- Limit or avoid high calorie beverages. One cup of eggnog has the same number of calories as a piece of apple pie.
- Drink plenty of water. It aids digestion and keeps you from feeling tired.
- Savor and enjoy food. Eating slowly means that you feel full by the time you’re done, not overfull!
- Take a walk after a big meal. Exercise aids digestion and helps to work off those extra calories.
- If presented with the option, choose fruit over ice cream, veggies and dip over cheese and crackers, salad over mashed potatoes. Raw foods are inherently healthy, so do your best to get enough of them.
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone!
Best wishes for the New Year,
